Kel Robertson was born on the south coast of New South Wales in the mid 1950s. He lived in Sydney, Wagga Wagga and Cobar before attending high school in Bathurst in the early 1970s.
He is a graduate of four Australian universities and has been a bored non-completer at a number of other tertiary institutions.
He lives and works in Canberra, where his grandfather was a minister of religion in the 1930s.
The biography of the author which appeared in the program for the Adelaide Writers Festival in 2010:
Kel Robertson grew up in country NSW and has worked as a barman, labourer, industrial officer and public servant. He is a graduate of four Australian universities and has behaved abominably at at least two others. In the 1970s and 80s he drank to excess and inhaled. If, in those barely recalled days, he enjoyed congress with your mother, edited your revolutionary organ or sang in your failed rock band, he apologises unreservedly, without conceding fault or admitting liability. He is now clean, sober and sorry. Some years ago he was admitted to practice as a solicitor.
